Bearing Classification: Design

Each type of bearing shows characteristics and properties that depend on their design which make it appropriate for a given application.

The rolling elements are formed as standard geometric shapes which include:

  • Deep Groove Ball Bearings
  • Self Aligning Ball Bearings
  • Angular Contact Ball Bearings
  • Cylindrical Roller Bearings
  • Needle Roller Bearings
  • Tapered Roller Bearings
  • Spherical Roller Bearings

Deep Groove Ball Bearings
Can bear up to moderate radial burdens as well as small axial loads. They have low friction and they have high accuracy. They are used in a great variety of applications. They have simple design, and are able to operate at very high speeds. Require little maintenance. These characteristics, together with their advantage of price, make these bearings the most popular of all.

Self aligning ball bearings
Are easy for mounting and dismounting. They are suitable for applications where misalignment can arise .

Angular Contact Ball Bearings
Are non-separable type bearings. It has had its ways tread so that the pressure exerted by the balls is applied oblique with respect to the axis. As a result of this disposition, the bearing is especially appropriate to bear not only radial burdens, but also great axial loads.

Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Are adapted for great radial loads, it also tolerates light or intermittent thrust loads and can also support high speeds. Its separable races provides easier installation. These Bearings typically have low torque and low tolerance to misalignment.

Needle Bearings
Have thin and long cylindrical rollers in relation to his smaller diameter. In spite of their small rollers, these bearings have the highest load capacity and are appropriate for the applications where the radial space is limited.

Tapered Roller Bearings

Are designed to carry maximum combinations of radial and thrust loads simultaneously. For cases that the axial load is very important there is a series of bearings whose angle is very open. This bearing must mount in opposition with another bearing able to support the center line forces in opposite sense.

Spherical Roller Bearings

Are self-aligning bearings designed to bear very heavy radial burdens, which allows them to assume shaft misalignments and large angular errors.
